Bamboo: an overlooked biomass resource?
Bamboo is the common term applied to a broad group (1250 species) of large woody grasses, ranging from 10 cm to 40 m in height. Already in everyday use by about 2.5 billion people, mostly for fiber and food within Asia, bamboo may have potential as a bioenergy or fiber crop for niche markets, although some reports of its high productivity seem to be exaggerated. Interesting Bamboo facts from South Africa
Other uses of bamboo are many and varied. It is used in the making of furniture, charcoal - BTU value of 8.6, handicrafts, basket ware, matting, rayon and paper, BLT (Biomass-to-Liquid)- bio diesel, and is used as food, fodder and fuel. In India, for example, much of the pulp used in making paper is from bamboo, just as it is in China. In Japan, Taiwan, China and Thailand, shoots of many species are a valuable souce of food. Relatively few species of bamboo are, however, currently used on a commercial scale.
